Shelter Care Educational Program

Heartland AEA’s Shelter Care Educational Program (SCEP) serves students from across Iowa by providing an effective learning environment that meets the students’ individual needs while they are staying at a shelter/detention facility. Many of the youth served by SCEP have been placed or referred by the Iowa Department of Human Services or juvenile court.

Shelter Care teachers and students have the same access to instructional supports as regular classrooms in the Heartland AEA area, including digital resources, books and materials available for checkout, professional learning and access to cooperative purchasing.
